Terfel, the fool.

If the Welsh bass baritone Bryn Terfel shines in almost all the characters allowed by his range, it would be impossible to imagine a better Falstaff. He is the character invented by Shakespeare and sublimated by Verdi and his librettist Boito. Touching, dull, funny, moving, clowning, tragic: each facet of the heroic hero is incarnated by this immense singer.

Google Translate:
The evening opens as it should be on the hedonistic laugh of Sir John Falstaff, now inseparable from its interpreter Bryn Terfel. The voice and the incarnation are as generous as its imposing belly, but as thin as the curved edges of its whiskers. The public enjoys this model performance all evening long, both admiring and laughing heartily in front of this unbalanced cupid, this good-natured character who sprawls in the armchairs or struggles like a beautiful devil while he is in beautiful sheets - or rather the dishcloths of the dirty laundry basket that ends thrown into the Thames.
The saying goes: some performers have so much genius that we could go and hear them sing the book. This Falstaff is so great, as the audience takes pleasure in listening to him declaim the huge receipt of cash registering his drinks at the hostel.

Bryn Terfel masters his role and the style of this opus, a tragi-comedy carried by a noble baritone food. He is a living oxymoron: drollly noble, nobly funny, as amusing in his elegant carriage and costume that he remains noble in pajamas with antlers on his head. Especially since the wording refers to the plumage: this incarnation marries a voice very wide but agile to the devil, a singing word, from purring to howling, sore and jovial, philosopher.

Bryn Terfel slips once again with enormous pleasure in a costume that is just too big. Grotesque, cowardly, rebellious, angry, vicious, nothing is missing from his Pancione except the metaphysical anxiety that gives the character an extra dimension.

Another wonderful review.

Bryn Terfel, Falstaff par excellence

Google Translate:
If the bass-baritone alone is the epicenter of the scene it is not because of the fat belly of his character, which proudly launches: "This is my kingdom - I will spread it! "But rather because of its many artistic qualities: an exceptional charisma, an ease on stage, a fluid and honest game, an outstanding musicality and an Italian that one would understand without having ever read the booklet.

We will notice the talent at the beginning of the 3rd act, when sitting on a wooden box, on the edge of the stage, his endearing matamore meditates on his destiny ("Go old John, go!") So sincere and honest that he manages to create a real intimacy with the public. Accomplices, the lights of Philippe Albaric plunge the rest of the room in the dark and give us the impression of being alone with him.

It is all over and Liverpool next.

Fragments of the performance given in Paris (role debut) in Verdi's last work, FALSTAFF. A huge burst of laughter and an amazing show not to be missed.

An interview in French with Sir Bryn and Yannick Haenel in French.

Le ventre et la couronne
Rencontre entre Bryn Terfel et Yannick Haenel

https://www.operadeparis.fr/magazine/le-ventre-et-la-couronne

GOOGLE Translate:

Nothing in common between the latest novel by Yannick Haenel, recently awarded with the Medici Prize, and Falstaff, at the Opéra Bastille. What connection does the hero of Tiens closes your crown - unlucky author of a scenario that nobody wants to produce - and the vain and ruined gentleman buffoon of Verdi's opera, which ends up rushed into the Thames? However, it was enough for the novelist to meet Bryn Terfel, the masterful performer of the title role, to create a dialogue between them with lots of breaks, in the course of which, among other things, philosophy and deer, drama and Harvey were discussed. Weinstein, poetry and wine ... A meeting orchestrated by Alexandre Lacroix.........
