|On the morning of 21 October 1966, news teams from across the world began reporting on one of the most tragic stories in Welsh history. Following the catastrophic collapse of a colliery waste tip above the primary school in Aberfan, 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives.
Aberfan is a concert performance designed to commemorate 50 years since the disaster: remembering those who lost their lives, reflecting on the courage of the survivors and the bereaved and to celebrate the spirit with which the community has faced the future.
S4C have commissioned a special piece, Aberfan, which will receive its world première at the concert. Composed and conducted by Karl Jenkins with libretto by Welsh poet Mererid Hopwood, Aberfan will be performed by Sinfonia Cymru and sung by a mixed choir of over 150 along with a children’s choir of 116.
Some of Wales’ most celebrated artists will take part including harpist Catrin Finch, brass specialist David Childs, soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and world-renowned bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. The evening will also feature new written work, read by various artists along with special performances from the community given by The Ynysowen Male Choir and school choirs from Ynysowen Community Primary School and Ysgol Rhyd y Grug.
A co-production between Wales Millennium Centre and Mr Producer on behalf of The Aberfan Memorial Charity and produced for television by Rondo Media.
